Taking Back Our Democracy

Please vote YES this November to get big corporate money out of our democracy!

The United States Supreme Court recently decided that corporations are ‘people’ and have constitutional rights that our forefathers bestowed on living, breathing human beings. Through this decision – Citizens United vs. the FEC – corporations were given the first amendment right to spend unlimited amounts of money influencing elections and ballot initiatives.

Now states like Montana can no longer place reasonable restrictions on spending by corporations, and even worse, corporations and the shell groups they create no longer have to identify themselves when trying to influence your vote. The only way to make things right is to pass a constitutional amendment clearly stating that corporations are not people and do not have the same constitutional rights.

Voters are already turned off by the money in politics – why give people another reason to feel their vote doesn’t count? And our friends, families, neighbors, and communities will never be able to outspend big corporations when it comes to protecting our safety and well-being. It is we who must drink the water and breathe the air around us – why should our voices be drowned out by corporations with unlimited dollars?

Only our state legislators and congresspeople can amend the constitution – but we in Missoula can and must have a say on this important issue!

On your Missoula City Ballot, you will have the chance to urge our state and federal elected officials to amend the US Constitution to explicitly state the corporations are not people. Please join us in taking back our democracy!
